The limb has two scales: one in degrees and one in thousandths of an inch (approximately 25.4 μm) and the cardinal points are marked in large, easy-to-read letters. During twilight hours or in the dark, you can illuminate the limb with the built-in LEDs; simply press the button to the right of the compass frame.

The compass lid contains a crosshair that, together with the one on the top of your magnifier, will allow you to set direction with great accuracy. The thumb strap located near the crosshair is used to hold the compass in place. The sides of the compass are graduated with scalimeters for working with maps.
