Atmospheric dispersion corrector ZWO ADC

what is an atmospheric dispersion corrector ADC?

An atmospheric dispersion corrector is a small device that is able to correct the dispersion that the earth's atmosphere generates on light rays. When we observe a bright object such as a planet through a telescope, we often see chromatic effects due to atmospheric scattering. We can see red and blue lines on a planet like Jupiter, and also have a slightly distorted image. This effect is caused by the interaction of the light from Jupiter interacting with the molecules in the upper layers of the atmosphere that behave like a prism. These effects may vary slightly depending on the position of the object, because if they are close to the horizon, as they cross more of the atmosphere the effects will be more evident than if the object is close to the zenith.

The atmospheric dispersion corrector corrects this dispersion effect, allowing you to see the objects without these dispersions and aberrations. With the ZWO ADC you no longer need to wait until the object is high enough in the sky to have an acceptable view. Now you will be able to see it with crystal clarity at all times.

how does the ZWO ADC work?

As mentioned above, when light from planets and stars passes through the Earth's atmosphere, the light is "refracted" (and deflected at a certain angle depending on the wavelength). This effect, similar to that suffered by light when it passes through a prism, causes a significant decomposition of the light into colors causing a significant chromatic aberration. This effect significantly impairs photography and visual observation of objects.

The ZWO ADC or atmospheric dispersion corrector is an opto-mechanical accessory that corrects this harmful effect, using the chromatic superimposition of two rotating prisms.

The small levers on the ADC move the prisms in opposite directions and allow the compensation to be adjusted from nothing to maximum effect when the levers are 180° apart.

Some wavelengths are more affected by dispersion than others. The ADC makes compensation for this effect very simple to achieve by simply adjusting these prism rotation control levers.

Needless to say, with this control over the harmful effect of dispersion, image quality both visually and in planetary astrophotography will be greatly improved.
