The new ATIK 383L+ is an 8 Megapixel camera using the KODAK KAF-8300 CCD chip. In recent times a lot of literature has been published about this CCD justifying its place in the hearts of astronomers. We can summarize it briefly by saying that it is a fabulous CCD with a large number of pixels (of very good pixel dimensions each) and that it is now available at an irresistible price. This CCD has redefined the mid-range of astrophotography cameras, making multi-megapixel and cooled cameras much more affordable.
ATIK the KODAK KAF-8300 CCD is proud to be able to supply cameras with the best image quality at reasonable prices. ATIK has relied on its already famous ATIK 3 platform to support the KODAK KAF-8300 CCD technology. This already guarantees, right from the start, a number of advantages including very low electronic read noise and the confidence of using a stable electronic design. The key to any quality camera is its ability to convert the light received by the sensor into digital information (electrons) while ensuring that as little electronic noise is added to the signal as possible (this is known as the quantum efficiency of the CCD). The digital image needs to reflect the light actually received
The ATIK 383L+ achieves what is described here and has the following characteristics:
- Very low background noise, 7 electrons, on par with many SONY sensors, enabling the camera to detect detail in faint objects.
- High linearity of the CCD response, with a regression correlation coefficient of R=0.9998 in the range of 1,000 to 64,000, making the camera ideal for high sensitivity photometric measurements.
- The Bias histogram of this camera shows a perfect Gaussian, indicating that maximum detail can be extracted in image processing.
The side of the ATIK 383L+ shows the cooling fans which, by means of a flow across the chamber from one side to the other, easily dissipate the excess residual temperature produced by the Peltier. In this way, a temperature difference with respect to ambient temperature of -40 °C can be achieved. The ATIK 383L+ is a dream combination of low electronic noise and a research level sensor that ATIK is able to offer at a fantastic price. Whether you are an experienced astrophotographer or a beginner, the ATIK 383L+ is a great choice.
