Observing the sky with the naked eye, let alone with binoculars or telescopes, is exciting but, until now, amateurs could admire the Universe only in a narrow band of electromagnetic waves, those of visible light.

PrimaLuceLab changes the rules, introducing SPIDER300A, the radio telescope that combines the most advanced radio technology with the one most familiar to amateur astronomers to allow everyone to discover the fascinating world of radio astronomy thanks to a new, highly sophisticated, modular and easy-to-use instrument.

The objects that make up the Universe emit a large amount of electromagnetic waves at different frequencies that are almost all filtered by the Earth's atmosphere. However, radio waves pass unhindered through our atmosphere and can also be captured by amateur astronomers thanks to SPIDER300A. This radio telescope has been developed by PrimaLuceLab to be the first instrument for amateur radio astronomy so that everyone can approach this fascinating science in a simple and affordable all-in-one solution with high scientific performance.

sPIDER 300A is an advanced 1420 MHz radio telescope designed to enable schools, universities, science museums and other educational institutes to perform real radio astronomy! Designed with the same features as large professional radio telescopes, SPIDER 300A is a complete, reliable and easy-to-use instrument.

This radio telescope can detect many different radio sources, not only in our Solar System. All components of this radio telescope have been designed to offer the best performance and long term intensive use.

The large 3 meter diameter parabolic antenna offers high gain, the special weatherproof WP-100 altazimuthal mount with high load capacity allows high precision tracking performance even in strong wind and inclement weather conditions, and the H142One receiver at 1420 MHz has the capability to record radio emissions from the hydrogen line. And everything is remotely controlled by our RadioUniversePRO software that controls the radio telescope and records the signals coming from space!

WEB300-5: the 3-meter dish antenna.

In order to create a powerful, yet compact and easy-to-handle radio telescope, we developed the WEB300-5 antenna which, thanks to its 3-meter diameter and a fine wire mesh construction, provides a large collecting surface with a low overall weight. Special rear supports maintain the rigidity of the entire dish on its mount, preventing any bending and ensuring the effectiveness of the pointing system. This also helps to maintain a perfect parabolic shape with a maximum error of less than lambda / 20.

Developed specifically for 1420 MHz Radio2Space radio telescopes, the H-FEED is designed for optimum illumination of the primary reflector, allowing high gain while minimizing side lobes and spillover, thus obtaining the best possible performance from the 3-meter parabolic antenna. The feedhorn is designed to allow dual polarization reception with support for two professional low noise amplifiers (LNA) for the 1420 MHz frequency. The feedhorn is placed at the perfect focus point of the antenna through a rigid structure with four supports to minimize obstruction, with a focusing device to precisely focus and maximize the performance of the entire radio telescope.

WP-100: the alt-az weatherproof computerized mount.

Radio astronomy can be performed day or night, even when it is cloudy, since the 1420 MHz radio waves are not blocked by clouds. For this reason, to take advantage of this opportunity, we designed the fully weatherproof WP-100 altazimuth mount, which allows you to leave the SPIDER 300A radio telescope permanently installed outdoors. Equipped with an automatic tracking and goto system controlled by the radio telescope's software, it allows you to frame and track your target with great precision. The WP-100 mount has a load capacity of 100 kg with very high precision pointing and tracking (encoders with a reading resolution of 0.0015°). It can also be equipped with a special electronic safety system (optional) that "parks" the antenna pointing to the Zenith (vertical position) when the wind exceeds 50 km/h.

C106-HEAVY: the high load capacity column.

The WEB300-5 antenna, because of its large diameter, can generate a lot of force on the ground: when combined with the weight of the WP-100 mount, a very stable and robust anchoring system is required. The C106-HEAVY column offers all these features and is designed to keep the SPIDER 300A radio telescope permanently installed in the field. The SPIDER 300A and the C106-HEAVY are designed to be installed on a reinforced concrete base, fixed by special high-strength bolts. Complete site base designs are supplied with the radio telescope installation and operation manuals, depending on the different types of ground on which you plan to install the SPIDER 300A radio telescope.

H142-One: the 1420 MHz receiver for radio astronomy, radiometer and spectrometer.

To get the best possible performance from the 3 meter diameter antenna of the SPIDER 300A, the H142-One receiver has been specially developed, with a 1420 MHz superheterodyne type radiometer / spectrometer, double conversion (UP/DOWN type) with 50 MHz received instantaneous bandwidth (RF = 1.395MHz-1.445MHz) and 14-bit analog-to-digital converter. The H142-One receiver has a spectrometer with 1024 channels (every 61 KHz) which are displayed and processed in real time by the control software supplied with the radio telescope. Thanks to the high gain and low electronic noise of this receiver, the SPIDER 300A radio telescope can record many radio sources throughout the universe, with a theoretical flux of at least 13 Jy.

RadioUniversePRO: the control, data capture and processing software for radio astronomy.

SPIDER 300A comes with RadioUniversePRO software that is specifically designed to allow you to check all telescope parameters, as well as operate and record various results. RadioUniversePRO can be installed on a standard Windows computer and is compatible with Vista, 7, 8 and 10. The graphical interface provides a simple mode with integrated planetarium that displays in real time the position of radio sources in the sky, and then allows you to simply point the SPIDER 300A radio telescope at those sources. RadioUniversePRO also offers the ability to activate an advanced interface that adds many additional options, customizations and features typical of professional radio telescopes that are most useful for expert users (features found in RadioUniversePRO that offer the same modus operandi of larger radio telescopes).

Our control software for radio telescopes PrimaLuceLab and receivers has the following main features:

          • Intuitive and easy to use: on a single screen showing all the controls of the radio telescope. English user interface.
          • Mount control, which allows you to remotely control all German computerized equatorial mounts equipped with an ASCOM controller (installation of the ASCOM platform is required).
          • Receiver control: allows you to connect and control receivers
          • Planetarium: displays the entire sky with stars, constellations, the position of the planets, geostationary TV satellites and the main natural radio wave sources in the Universe.
          • Image mode: allows you to configure the recording parameters of radio images, maps and save the results.
          • Transit mode: allows you to set up transit recording with various parameters of the desired object, display the curve and save the results.
