Maksutov-Newton MN-152 Comet Hunter David H. Levy EXPLORE SCIENTIFIC Telescope

Highly corrected optics for wide-field observation and astrophotography. Developed in collaboration with the famous "comet hunter" David H. Levy. The Maksutov-Newton system has some advantages and disadvantages over the classical Newtonian design.

Apart from its higher price, the main disadvantage is its heavier weight, due to the thick corrector lens at the front. The main advantage of the Maksutov-Newton over the classical newton is the sharpness of the field of view. Classical newton telescopes show a sharp stellar image only in the center of the field of view; off the optical axis they have a dominant aberration, the so-called coma. This is inherent to the Newtonian design, and therefore valid for all Newtonian telescopes of all brands and not caused by manufacturing tolerances. The coma distorts the image of the star - the point star shows a tail, just like a small comet. This considerably decreases sharpness and contrast.

The Maksutov-Newton shows a much sharper star image - for most applications the coma is not visible. The result is a high-contrast image across the entire field of view, both for visual observations and for astrophotography with DSLR cameras. This makes the Maksutov-Newton an ideal multi-purpose telescope, capable of displaying a sharp field without the need for additional correctors.
