With the solar panel mounted near your camera and connected to the external power input jack, you will notice that the camera batteries last much longer before they need to be replaced. The solar panel has an internal lithium-ion battery, which the solar cells continuously charge when exposed to the sun. Once connected, the camera will draw power from the solar panel's charged lithium battery for as long as possible and switch to batteries only when the solar panel's battery charge level becomes too low. As a result, the camera batteries will have a considerably longer battery life.
Solar panel charging via USB
The solar panel also includes a USB port, allowing the internal battery to be "pre-charged" prior to use in the field, via a computer USB connection or similar available USB port. It is NOT necessary to do this before use, but it will allow you to begin providing supplemental power to your camera immediately, rather than waiting for the solar cells to build up an adequate charge. To use this feature, connect a compatible mini USB cable (not included) to the solar panel and your computer or a suitable power source. The charging LED indicator on the back of the solar panel will glow red while charging is in progress, then turn green when charging is complete.
Mounting and connecting the camera
A mounting bracket is included with the solar panel. The bracket should first be bolted to the tree at a point above the camera where the solar panel will be exposed to unobstructed sunlight for most of the day. With the swivel head firmly attached to the tree stand, attach the threaded bolt on the end of the swivel head to the mounting socket (¼" x 20 metal) on the back of the solar panel. Loosen the knob on the swivel head and then the solar panel so that the solar cells are facing the sun. Once aligned, tighten both locking collars. Finally, connect the included cable to both the solar panel and the camera and gather and tie the loose portion of cable.
