- No electronic eyepiece in the eQuinox version
- Longer battery life (from 9h to 11h thanks to the absence of electronic eyepiece)
- Smaller sensor (6.2 Mpx vs. 7.7 Mpx for the eVscope)
- Black color (silver-gray for the eVscope)
- The easy-to-use digital telescope
Digital technology and the development of applications for smartphones and tablets have changed the world of astronomy in recent years. Unistellar, a French start-up, has taken this philosophy one step further by making its telescope a concentrate of patented technologies. The eVscope/eQuinox (Enhanced Vision Telescope) is the result of 5 years of research and development by 4 Frenchmen to allow everyone: beginners in Astronomy or simply curious of the sky to discover space and its wonders... without having any knowledge in this field. For amateurs or experts, the eVscope/eQuinox represents a quick solution to install as a complement to your equipment.
The eVscope is a 114 mm diameter telescope (size of its primary mirror) on a motorized altazimuth dual-axis motorized mount, in a "Newton" configuration with a digital camera in place of the secondary mirror. The image captured by the camera is transferred to an on-board computer that returns the image via an algorithm to your tablet or smartphone.
(The Orion nebula M42 and the galaxy M81 captured by a Vscope)
Via the "Unistellar" app on Google Play Store (Android) or iOS (Apple), choose the imaging mode (Enhance) to accumulate the light from a galaxy, nebula or comet over several minutes and photograph it in detail. The eVscope takes care of preprocessing (to limit noise) and processing. The longer it sits, the more shapes appear and the contrast increases. Making visible objects invisible to the naked eye.
A simplified set-up
One of the pitfalls of "traditional" telescopes is their set-up (initialization). The eVscope offers the simplest solution on the market. After having connected your smartphone in Wifi to the eVscope, point it at any region of the sky with the virtual joystick. It then performs an automatic recognition of the targeted field by comparing it with the 10 million stars in its database. In a few seconds the device is configured and equipped with a tracking (compensation of the Earth's rotation), you just have to choose from its catalog of +5 000 celestial objects: a planet, a comet, a galaxy, a nebula or a star cluster.
Ergonomically, the eVscope is, in fact, so compact that it fits in a medium-sized hiking backpack, making it the ideal companion for impromptu observing evenings, even on vacation. A tripod is included as standard, as well as a Bahtinov mask (in the dust cover), which is a handy tool for adjusting the focus (sharpness of images).
Participatory science
In collaboration with the U.S. SETI Institute, you can even harness the power of your eVscope to join a community of thousands of users and witness rare astronomical events, such as comets, supernovae or exoplanet transits, while collecting data for scientific study.
