Columbus moon globe 34cm

For centuries, the hidden part of the Moon was unknown to humans. Only after the Apollo missions did sufficiently good data become available to create the first complete lunar globes. Since the 1970s, the classic Columbus globe has been found in many schools and homes. It is a hollow globe with hand-covered map images.

In recent years, the LRO, Kaguya and Clementine lunar probes have clearly improved the data on the Moon. It was noticeable that the creators of the 1972 lunar globe had cheated at some points. While the first useful maps of the front and back of the Moon were available at that time, there was only vague information about the peripheral areas. For the areas around Mare Marginis and Mare Australe, and especially for Mare Smythii, fanciful landscapes were drawn.

Based on the current LRO data, the Columbus company has manufactured a new exclusive lunar balloon in small series. It is probably the first exactly worked lunar globe in the world.

These moon globes are exclusive, numbered individual pieces. The map image is covered by hand. This achieves a significantly better resolution than with previous globes in the deep-drawn process.
