The traditional equatorial mount requires heavy counterweights. It can be very difficult to maintain balance in the RA and DEC directions, and also inconvenient for transportation and storage, putting extra strain on astrophotographers when they are out for imaging.
Some of the tension wave gear transmission mounts are relatively simple in functions, insufficient in load capacity, and also not very stable in use.
To solve these problems, ZWO has developed the ASI series of mounts. No need for counterweight. With an own weight of 3.9 kg, the AM3 has a high load capacity of 8 kg to 13 kg. While portability is very important, stability is also essential in use.
Rather than blindly pursuing the lightness of the mount body, ZWO is more along the lines of stability for all-round use.
It is also multifunctional and can be used as either an equatorial mount or an altazimuth mount. You can control the mount via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, or a handheld controller.
Portable and stable
The internal body structure is optimized with tension wave gear reducer and synchronous belt, bringing more precise control and an incredible reduction ratio of 300: 1.
Customized Tension Wave Gearing
ZWO has developed a special tension wave gear based on the actual needs of astrophotography. It features very low periodic error and high torque. Each mount is tested and fitted with a unique PE curve before it leaves the factory so that quality is guaranteed.

The payload capacity of the AM3 without the counterweight is 8kg, and 13kg with the counterweight.
* The counterweight should be fixed on a counterweight bar of no more than 20cm in length.
According to the engineering calculations, we can calculate the maximum load capacity of the AM3 bracket:
8kg without the counterweight
13kg with the counterweight.
