The flattener is a field-equalizing lens, as the field is slightly curved by the primary optics. This curvature makes the stars displayed at the edge of the field of view less sharp. The flattener, also called a field flattener, corrects this effect. Thus, astrophotographers can enjoy images in which the stars remain sharp all the way to the edge of the exposure. The flattener is installed between the telescope and the camera.
This very high quality flattener is an FMC Triplet Apo design with the best optical crystals from Ohara, Japan.
