Bahtinov masks for easy and precise focusing of your astrophotographs

The Bahtinov mask is named after the inventor Pavel Bahtinov. This focusing aid allows astrophotographs to focus clearly at the focus of your telescope or with a camera lens.

Attaching the Bahtinov mask to your telescope is very easy .Each mask comes with three screws. Remove the grommets from the screws, insert the screws through the holes and then replace the grommets over the screws. Now you can simply attach the focusing mask to your telescope and begin focusing.

This is how focusing works with your camera on the telescope or lens.

♦ Put the mask on the telescope and point it at a bright star.
♦ Turn on the camera and observe the constellation in Live View or on the computer.
♦ If the recording is not exactly sharp, the center line shifts .Adjust the focuser until the center line passes right through the center of the star.
♦ You have now reached optimum sharpness .Remove the mask from the telescope and you can start exposing the image.

Practical tips :

♦ Focusing with a Bahtinov mask is suitable for deep sky photography at telescope focus or with a camera lens. Correctors or Barlow lenses can be used.
♦ Use a medium brightness star for focusing, it should not be too bright, but not too dark either .Reflected lines should be clearly recognizable.
♦ The star should not be exactly in the middle, as the field of view of the corrected telescope or lens is often not 100% flat .Take a star in the outer third of the field. This will give you a better average sharpness for the entire recording.
