The Earth is a normal planet, which revolves around a normal star, located within a normal galaxy. The Sun and the Milky Way are typical specimens similar to millions of other stars and galaxies that we have observed with our telescopes. All our knowledge points to the fact that also our world and its neighbors are typical specimens of the planetary fauna. If this principle of mediocrity is true, if the Earth is a common example in the universe, it is likely that there is an immense number of inhabited worlds. This book tells us about Astrobiology, a science that tries to understand whether the life we know is an extraordinarily fortunate accident or, on the contrary, is a kind of cosmic imperative. To this end, he proposes a journey that begins with the Big-Bang itself, the origin of our universe, space-time and matter; it goes through the creation of the first stars and galaxies, and the formation of planetary systems; it recreates the beginnings of our Solar System and allows us to witness the birth and evolution of life on Earth. After this long journey, life is presented as a natural emergent phenomenon and we are invited to go through our first attempts to search for it in the exotic places of our neighboring planets. Reading such a work, one has the sensation of listening to a cosmogony similar to the ancient myths about the creation of the world and life. But let us remember that each of the stories told here are the result of the effort, work and fierce criticism of an infinite number of scientists. These are not castles in the air but, in some cases, hard facts and, in others, theories that have been tested time and again against the harshest gales. However, it does maintain something that ancient myths exhale: that magical surprise that gives us the answer to the question of who we are and how everything around us was formed.
