Synopsis
Humanity as a collective has faced a number of challenges that have been decisive for its future throughout its history. Among them is the exploration of its environment, both geographically, with the expansion to different habitats, and astronomically, with the aim of understanding reality from a broad point of view. Now, among other challenges, we are faced with the enigma posed by the extraordinary diversity of worlds. In the few decades that have elapsed since the discovery of the first planet outside the Solar System, we have gone through several phases: from the largely surprising demonstration of its existence to detailed characterization, including interiors and atmospheres. The next phase could even be possible in situ exploration and, why not, colonization. Here we recount this epic and hope that, in this new adventure, we have learned something from the past. The stars, and their planets, await us.
