Synopsis

Although it was not until well into the nineteenth century when it was possible to determine the extraterrestrial origin of meteorites, since then scientific research has been bringing us closer to the knowledge and understanding of these natural phenomena, away from myth, superstition and beliefs that have surrounded both these and the fireballs that announce their fall

Author: Trigo Rodríguez, Josep Maria

Josep Maria Trigo Rodríguez, PhD in Physical Sciences, specializing in astrophysics, from the University of Valencia (2002), is a CSIC scientist at the Institute of Space Sciences (Barcelona). After writing his doctoral thesis on the entry of meteoroids into the Earth's atmosphere and their chemical composition, he studied primitive meteorites at the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). He was the only Spanish researcher involved in the preliminary examination of the samples of comet 81P/Wild 2 recovered by the Stardust mission (NASA), the first returned from a solar system body other than the Moon. His work is linked to the formation processes of comets, asteroids and meteorites, as well as the dynamic transport processes to Earth and other planets. He has published nearly fifty scientific articles in international refereed journals, ten books and dozens of popular articles for which he has received several awards, including the BBVA Foundation-RSEF 2009. In honor of his research work and his contribution to the Marco Polo-R mission (ESA), the Minor Planet Center decided in 2012 that an asteroid of about 5 kilometers in diameter should be named after him: 8325 Trigo-Rodriguez.
