The eyepiece is half of a telescope's optics - and when you try to use the optical system to its limits, even good mid-class eyepieces become the limiting factor. Morpheus® eyepieces provide a sharp image all the way to the edge of the 76° (true) field of view. Brightness and contrast richness offer a new dimension in eyepiece design. These eight-lens eyepieces with Phantom Coating® Group excel in planetary observation as well as deep sky objects - especially when serving as photographic projection eyepieces due to their flat field design.
All Morpheus® widefield eyepieces with focal lengths from 4.5 to 17.5 mm are the perfect complement to your low magnification eyepieces. Even at the highest magnifications, each Morpheus® eyepiece provides a larger field of view than many eyepieces with more than 80 degrees of apparent field of view. The absence of eyepiece distortion allows you to monitor the entire field at once and easily find the best viewing position, while enjoying unparalleled spatial sensation. You will see deep sky objects beautifully embedded in their stellar environment. In addition, the wide, sharp field of view gives you much longer observing time in non-motorized (Dobsonian) telescopes without touching the telescope and without changing the eyepiece. All Morpheus® eyepieces feature 1.25" and 2" eyepieces without the much-loathed notches. Even so, all Morpheus® eyepieces are perfectly safe against slippage thanks to their multitude of individual Safety-Kerfs cut into the barrels. The 2" nosepiece is integrated into the eyepiece body, which saves about 21 mm in focusing travel. This is especially useful with ultra-low focal plane telescopes (visual Newtonians). And for many other telescopes it eliminates the need for a 2"/ 1¼" reducer adapter.
Due to their shape, design and low weight, Morpheus® eyepieces are the best eyepieces to use in a binocular. No other eyepiece series has been consistently designed for this use, while offering the same (true) field angle, minimizing vignetting and providing a 55 mm outer housing diameter throughout, to allow binocular viewing even for children with only 55 mm interpupillary distance. The slim outer body has been made as small as possible, with no metal added simply for the look or feel. The "eyepiece lens group" has a very large size, so that the visual behavior is totally stress-free. Even at great distances, the object remains visible, a feature much appreciated by public observatories with many inexperienced visitors. You will not find an eyepiece that offers a better "space-floating effect". Especially when both eyes are used, the edge of the field of view virtually disappears, creating that famous "floating in space" feeling.
Like the Hyperion® modular eyepiece series with 68° field of view, the 76° Morpheus® eyepiece series is also particularly suitable for photography. Distortion is even lower than with the Hyperion® eyepieces, despite the larger field of view. The M43/T-2 photo/video adapter ring (No. 2958080) fits all Morpheus® eyepieces. With this optional M43/T-2 connector, you can use virtually any DSLR or system camera for classic eyepiece projection via the established T-2 bayonet ring system and attach the eyepiece instead of an objective at the correct projection distance in front of the camera. For the so-called afocal eyepiece projection, an M43/SP54 extension ring (No. 2954251) is also available, which opens the door to a world of SP54 camera objective magnifying/decreasing rings (Hyperion® DT rings). With this ring system, any Morpheus® eyepiece can be mounted so close to the front lens of a large photographic objective that the eyepieces of the eyepiece and the front lens of the camera almost make contact - but only almost! It is precisely this precise distance control that allows good illumination of the camera sensor during afocal projection.
Optical characteristics
Full-field sharpness: The sharp, flat 76° field is unsurpassed by any other modern wide-field eyepiece. On-axis sharpness and contrast rivals any eyepiece Zeiss Abbe II, while offering nearly equivalent performance over the entire field. Stars remain diamond pinpoints as you move away from the center, and the field remains flat and in focus, even in short-focus telescopes.
Long eye relief: Morpheus® takes wide-field viewing comfort further than ever before, offering nearly 20mm of eye relief along with best-in-class optical performance. Eyeglass wearers can comfortably enjoy the entire field, and binocular wearers will find that Morpheus® is the ultimate two-eye viewing eyepiece.
Low distortion: The highly sophisticated optical design provides extremely low distortion (magnification angular distortion). Planets and lunar features retain their shapes as they transit the field and the actual field sizes match the theoretical value. Many companies exaggerate on this point and deliberately use off-axis magnification distortion as a means of advertising "apparent" field sizes. You can compare this given field size of 76° and verify that it is the actual value, calculated from the apparent field size and focal length.
Immersive views: As avid observers ourselves, we have studied the behavior of the most common wide-field eyepieces and listened to feedback from other observers about which eyepieces offer the most palpable and engaging wide-field viewing experience. What we have discovered is that the subjective feeling of "spacewalking" does not depend on the field of view alone. Interestingly, some wide-field eyepieces with 82-degree fields did not offer the same viewing experience as others with similar fields, or even some with smaller fields. We found two additional primary factors playing into the equation: eye relief (and related large ocular lens size) and ease of viewing (a combination of long eye relief and control of pupillary aberrations). We also observed that fields well below 74 degrees tended to have a reduced effect. So, with this information in hand, we set out to design the Morpheus® series with a 76° field of view that met all the other optical parameters necessary to deliver a truly "immersive" viewing experience in which the eyepiece virtually disappeared.
Phantom Coating® Group: A pioneer in the Hyperion® line, the Phantom Multi-Coating Group has been further optimized for use on the Morpheus® and matched to the index of each of the different goggles.
Optimized internal baffles: as with all eyepieces Baader Planetarium, the internal mechanics have been completely mapped to eliminate the effects of stray light and reflections.
Mechanical characteristics
Optimized for binocular vision: Every last space in the main body has been used to minimize its size, providing maximum nose clearance for binocular vision.
Weight reduction: Every effort has been made to eliminate unnecessary weight, especially for effective binocular vision. The weight of all Morpheus® eyepieces is essentially that of the inner lenses plus the best protection and water resistance we can supply.
Folding eyepieces: The round rubber folding eyepiece incorporates a metal clamping ring with integrated M43 thread. This threaded attachment allows the eyepiece to be soft and flexible, while keeping the eyepiece firmly attached to the eyepiece when folded or extended. The second special version with included wings provides maximum comfort and the exclusion of stray light necessary for binocular viewing with spectacles. These eye protectors have been developed to provide optimum comfort and eye relief for most spectacle wearers and spectacle wearers. The eyecups also protect the M43 thread that is used to adapt a camera, as described on the reverse side of this brochure. The M43 extension can be used to adjust the eye distance and to adapt a camera.
Safety Features: The 1¼" and 2" barrels of each Morpheus incorporate our Slip-Protect safety edges. The ideal safety compromise between smooth barrels and wide recesses. The numerous shallow edges provide additional grip and safety against unintentional dropping of smooth barrels, without the annoying problems sometimes caused by traditional wide recesses. The wide, waffle-shaped rubber grip ring provides an additional measure of handling safety.
Luminescent labeling: The labeling glows a soft green, if the eyepiece has been some time in the light, or if it has been directly illuminated with a flashlight. This allows you to immediately recognize which focal length is in your hand, even in the darkest night.
Belt pouch: Not enough room on the telescope? The holster not only protects the eyepiece, but can also be used as a belt pouch or attached to the tripod.
Photo-video adaptation: Like their Hyperion siblings, all Morpheus eyepieces are superb imaging optics. Each Morpheus includes a concealed M43 thread for photo-video eyepieces that allows the use of our wide range of Hyperion Digital T-Rings. These rings allow direct attachment of virtually any imaging device for maximum rigidity and close coupling for minimal vignetting.
